"Battle" is a Boon!
The 5th Annual "Battle of Waterloo" high school wrestling duals tournament was held December 19-20 at Young Arena in Waterloo. The tournament is hosted by the Waterloo Community School District and the Cedar Valley Catholic Schools.
The two-day event included 32 high school wrestling teams from across the state of Iowa. The unique format of the tournament allows teams to compete against each other regardless of school size / class designation. This year's champion was Union High School of LaPorte City.
The Cedar Valley Sports Commission provided $3,500 in grant funding to the tournament and also donated the use of wrestling mats.
The Battle of Waterloo creates an estimated economic impact of nearly $400,000 in the Cedar Valley.
Inaugural Hawkeye Nationals a Success
The Midwest Wrestling Tour (MYAS) and the local "Sailor Mat Club" partnered to host the first-ever "Hawkeye Nationals" youth wrestling tournament December 6-7 at Young Arena in Waterloo. The event included more than 600 youth wrestlers 1000 spectators.
The Cedar Valley Sports Commission awarded the event a $1,500 grant to help offset facility rental costs. The Sports Commission also donated mats used for the tournament.
In addition to the Hawkeye Nationals, the Midwest Wrestling Tour includes the Badgerland Nationals (La Crosse, WI) and the Gopher State Nationals (Monticello, MN).
